Mod targets

TargetPath under game folderNotes
ModsPrimary target. Each mod is a set of files laid over the game folder under archive, bin, engine, mods, r6 and red4ext. Disabled mods are kept in .modrex/disabled.
Archive modsarchive/pc/modArchives installed by hand. The game reads only the top of this folder.
REDmod modsmodsREDmods installed by hand, recognised by info.json.
CET modsbin/x64/plugins/cyber_engine_tweaks/modsCyber Engine Tweaks mods installed by hand, recognised by init.lua.
redscript modsr6/scriptsScript folders installed by hand. redscript reads this folder recursively, so disabled ones move to r6/scripts.disabled.

A Cyberpunk mod often places files in several game folders at once: an .archive in archive/pc/mod, scripts in r6/scripts, tweaks in r6/tweaks, a plugin in red4ext/plugins and a Lua mod for Cyber Engine Tweaks. Modrex installs the whole download as one mod and records every file it placed, so enabling, disabling, updating and uninstalling act on all of them together. Frameworks such as Cyber Engine Tweaks, RED4ext, redscript, ArchiveXL, TweakXL and Codeware install the same way, from their own pages.

Modrex works out where each file goes before it writes anything:

  • A download laid out like the game folder, with archive, bin, engine, mods, r6 or red4ext at its top, installs exactly as laid out. A single folder around it is looked through.
  • A loose .archive or .xl file goes to archive/pc/mod, and a loose .reds file to r6/scripts.
  • A folder holding init.lua goes to the Cyber Engine Tweaks mods folder, a folder holding info.json is a REDmod and goes to mods, and a folder of .reds scripts goes to r6/scripts.
  • Several folders side by side that each install on their own are offered as choices. Pick the one the author tells you to use.

Read-me files, licences and pictures next to the mod are skipped.

Modrex never drops part of a download and never overwrites a file it did not install. It refuses the whole install, names the files involved and changes nothing when a download:

  • holds files it cannot place, such as a loose .yaml tweak or an executable
  • uses a FOMOD installer
  • puts files in a subfolder of archive/pc/mod, which the game does not read
  • would replace a game file, a file another mod installed, or a file you added by hand
  • would write inside a mod that appears separately in the installed list

Install such a mod by hand, or pick another file from its page.

Disabling a mod moves its files into .modrex/disabled in the game folder, where the game never looks, and enabling moves them back. A newer release of a mod replaces the files of the one it updates and stays disabled when the old one was. Uninstalling removes the files the mod placed and keeps any you changed since, which Modrex then reports. Files a framework creates while the game runs, such as logs and settings, are not Modrex’s and stay in place.

App folders are not available for this game, because a mod’s files are spread over the game folder rather than kept in one place.

Archives in archive/pc/mod, REDmods in mods, Cyber Engine Tweaks mod folders and redscript mod folders in r6/scripts that were installed without Modrex appear in the installed list under their own tabs and can be enabled, disabled and removed there. Loose .reds files placed by hand directly in r6/scripts, and anything else installed by hand, are not listed.

Modrex installs REDmods into mods. The game loads them after REDmod deploys them, which CDPR’s launcher does when mods are enabled in it. If you launch with --launcher-skip, deploy REDmods yourself.

This action moves the files of every enabled mod Modrex installed out of the game folder for one session, and puts them back on the next normal launch. Mods installed by hand are set aside too when they are listed under their own tabs. Anything installed by hand that is not listed, such as loose .reds files or a framework copied in manually, stays in place and still loads.
